Project Summary:
The 49th Street Bridge over I-29 will receive a low slump concrete overlay, retrofit of concrete barriers, repairs to joints and approach slabs, concrete pavement work, and installation of new pedestrian railing.
Work is scheduled for 50 working days, or approximately ten weeks, from the actual start. 49th Street between Terry Avenue and Solberg Avenue will be closed during construction. There will be no official detour, but motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed through the project area but will be detoured to opposite sides of the street as construction progresses.
Project Updates:
On Monday June 22, 2026, a full closure is scheduled for the 49th Street Bridge over Interstate 29 in Sioux Falls. During construction, 49th Street will be closed between Terry Avenue and Solberg Avenue. The planned duration of this bridge closure is 50 working days or approximately 10 weeks.
The 49th Street Bridge rehabilitation project over I-29 includes bridge deck repairs, retrofit of concrete barriers, repairs to joints and approach slabs, concrete pavement, installation of new pedestrian railing, and pavement markings.
Traffic Impacts:
There will not be an official detour during the bridge closure. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed through the project area but will be detoured to opposite sides of the street as construction progresses.

Project Summary:
The project includes work on various ramps along I-229 at Louise Avenue, Western Avenue, Rice Street, and the I-229/I-90 interchange. Activities include cold milling of asphalt concrete, planing PCC pavement, asphalt concrete resurfacing, saw and seal of AC joints, partial depth patching, nonreinforced and continuously reinforced concrete repairs, membrane sealant for expansion joints, and new pavement markings.
Work is scheduled for seven working days per ramp, with traffic restrictions in place to maintain access: ramps at Louise Avenue and Western Avenue will not be closed concurrently, and both on-ramps or off-ramps at Louise, Western, or Rice Street will not be closed at the same time. Additionally, the SB Louise to NB I-229 ramp will not be closed concurrently with the NB Louise to NB I-229 ramp.
Any ramp closures required for the application of durable pavement markings will occur overnight between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. and will not count toward the working-day total.

July 23, 2026:
On Monday, Aug. 10, 2026, a full closure is planned for southbound on- and off-ramps of Interstate 229 at Western Avenue (exit 2) in Sioux Falls. The duration of this closure will be approximately seven calendar days.
During the closures, work will be completed for asphalt overlays, sawing/sealing of joints, and temporary pavement markings. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes during these closures.

On Friday, Aug 7, 2026, a full closure is planned for northbound on- and off-ramps of Interstate 229 at Rice Street (exit 7) in Sioux Falls. The duration of this closure will be approximately seven calendar days.
During the closures, work will be completed for asphalt overlays, sawing/sealing of joints, and temporary pavement markings. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes during these closures.

Project Summary:
This project includes the placement of a median cable barrier and guardrail replacement, including guardrail embankment construction and surfacing. The project also includes relocating approximately five maintenance crossovers to accommodate the new barrier placement.
The work for this project will be performed under limited single lane closures only.
Project Updates:
Aug. 11, 2026:

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, a temporary ramp closure is planned for the westbound Maple Street to northbound Interstate 29 ramp in Sioux Falls. The duration of this closure will be approximately 10 working days.
This project includes guardrail replacement on I-29. Weather permitting, the temporary closure will be from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each day.

Ramp Closures Planned for 41st Street Interchange and Interstate 29
Aug. 18, 2026:
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, and Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, the left turn lanes on both the northbound and southbound off-ramps at Interstate 29 and the 41st Street Interchanges are scheduled to be closed in Sioux Falls.
The temporarily closure is scheduled both days from 9 a.m. through 12 p.m. (noon), weather dependent.
The right-hand turns on the ramps will remain open.
There will also be lane closures in place on the bridge for routine bridge deck crack sealing.
Traffic delays are anticipated. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes during the temporary off-ramp and lane closures.

Interstate 29 Exit 59 Temporary Ramp Closures
Aug. 4, 2026:
Temporary on- and off-ramp closures are scheduled at exit 59 on Interstate 29 south of Sioux Falls for Wednesday Aug. 5, 2026, and Thursday Aug. 6, 2026, to complete a milling and asphalt paving project.
Southbound on-and off-ramps at exit 59 will close during the morning hours on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, and will remain closed until milling is complete. Ramps will be reopened in the afternoon. Once the southbound ramps reopen, the northbound on- and off- ramps will close for milling that same day.
Southbound on and off ramps will close again on Thursday morning and remain closed until paving is complete. Once the southbound ramps reopen, the northbound on- and off- ramps will close for paving.
Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes during the temporary ramp closures at exit 59. The temporary ramp closure timeframes are weather dependent.
The prime contractor on this $5 million project is Central Specialties, Inc. of Alexandria, MN. The overall project completion date is Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.
