S.D. Highway 46 Through Wagner

Project Summary:

This project will consist of grading, surfacing, curb & gutter, sidewalk, lighting, signals, sanitary sewer, and water main. Crews will be regrading S.D. Highway 46 through Wagner with a three-lane section east of Washington Avenue and a five-lane section west of Washington Avenue. New lighting and sidewalks will be added through town along with crosswalks with flashing beacons that will improve safety for pedestrians. During the project, the City of Wagner is also installing new sanitary sewer and water main to upgrade their existing systems to ensure future reliability.

Spring 2025 - Nov. 2025: From East Ave SE to the east end of Wagner City Limits

Spring 2026 - Nov. 2026: Western half of S.D. Highway 46 from Grant Ave SE to the west end of Wagner City Limits

Spring/Summer 2027: Completing the durable pavement markings on S.D. Highway 46 throughout this project

Project Updates:

Oct. 27, 2025: 

Sept. 15, 2025 – Oct. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
The contractor made steady progress on the south side of S.D. Highway 46 despite intermittent rain. Key accomplishments included completing Phase Two installation of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water services; preparing a stable road base by removing unsuitable material and compacting the subgrade on the north side of the roadway; completing Phase Two paving operations through Grant Avenue; and installing sidewalk and colored concrete boulevard from Valley Pump to the Historical Museum.

Anticipated Work Oct. 15, 2025 – Nov. 15, 2025:
In the coming month, the contractor will continue infrastructure improvements, including grading and flatwork operations, progressing east to west on the north side of S.D. Highway 46. Work will include finishing flatwork at city intersections and the temporary tie-in connection to Highway 46, installing sidewalk and colored concrete boulevard from the Historical Museum to the west end of Phase Two, and landscaping and seeding remaining areas on the south side of Phase One and north side of Phase Two.

Temporary traffic control will be removed, temporary striping will be painted, and permanent road signs will be installed.
