S.D. Highway 46 Through Wagner

Project Summary:

This project will consist of grading, surfacing, curb & gutter, sidewalk, lighting, signals, sanitary sewer, and water main. Crews will be regrading S.D. Highway 46 through Wagner with a three-lane section east of Washington Avenue and a five-lane section west of Washington Avenue. New lighting and sidewalks will be added through town along with crosswalks with flashing beacons that will improve safety for pedestrians. During the project, the City of Wagner is also installing new sanitary sewer and water main to upgrade their existing systems to ensure future reliability.

Project Timeline:

Spring 2025 - Nov. 2025: From East Ave SE to the east end of Wagner City Limits

Spring 2026 - Nov. 2026: Western half of S.D. Highway 46 from Grant Ave SE to the west end of Wagner City Limits

Spring/Summer 2027: Completing the durable pavement markings on S.D. Highway 46 throughout this project

Project Updates:

Sept. 18, 2025: 

Aug. 15 – Sept. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
Despite intermittent rains, the contractor made progress on the south side of Highway 46. Key accomplishments included:

• Finishing Phase One on the south side of eastbound S.D. 46 through Grant Avenue.
• Starting Phase Two on the north side of westbound S.D. 46.
• Adjusting temporary traffic control to accommodate two-way traffic on the eastbound lanes and switching traffic.
• Removing existing asphalt, concrete, and base course materials on the north side.
• Installing storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water services from the east city limits to Front Avenue.
• Preparing a stable road base by removing unsuitable material and compacting the subgrade from the east city limits to Northwest Veterinary & Supply.
• Paving operations from S&K entrance to Valley Pump.

Anticipated Work Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, 2025:
Over the next month, the contractor will continue installing infrastructure improvements, staging pipe, and completing grading and paving operations. Work will progress east to west on the north side of Highway 46, including:

• Finishing installation of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water services.
• Preparing a stable road base by removing unsuitable material and compacting the subgrade from Northwest Veterinary & Supply to Sheridan Avenue SE.
• Paving operations from Valley Pump to Front Avenue.
• Installing sidewalk and colored concrete boulevard from Valley Pump to the S.D. Armory.
• We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to improve the safety and quality of this key transportation corridor.
