S.D. Highway 46 Through Wagner

Project Summary:

This project will consist of grading, surfacing, curb & gutter, sidewalk, lighting, signals, sanitary sewer, and water main. Crews will be regrading S.D. Highway 46 through Wagner with a three-lane section east of Washington Avenue and a five-lane section west of Washington Avenue. New lighting and sidewalks will be added through town along with crosswalks with flashing beacons that will improve safety for pedestrians. During the project, the City of Wagner is also installing new sanitary sewer and water main to upgrade their existing systems to ensure future reliability.

Project Timeline:

Spring 2025 - Nov. 2025: From East Ave SE to the east end of Wagner City Limits

Spring 2026 - Nov. 2026: Western half of S.D. Highway 46 from Grant Ave SE to the west end of Wagner City Limits

Spring/Summer 2027: Completing the durable pavement markings on S.D. Highway 46 throughout this project

Project Updates:

Nov. 21, 2025: 

Oct. 15, 2025 – Nov. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
The contractor has made steady progress on the south side of Highway 46. Key accomplishments include:

• Completing all flatwork at city intersections and the Highway 46 temporary tie-in connection.
• Installing sidewalk and colored concrete boulevard from the Historical Museum to the west end of Phase 2.
• Completing landscaping and seeding on the remaining south side of Phase 1 and the north side of Phase 2.
• Removing temporary traffic control, placing temporary striping, and installing permanent road signs.
• Beginning installation of light poles and crosswalk features.

Anticipated work Nov. 15, 2025 – Dec. 15, 2025:
The contractor will activate and test the new streetlights and continue cleanup throughout the construction zone. Work is expected to pause for winter, with Year 2, Phase 3 scheduled to begin March 30, 2026, progressing east to west along Highway 46.
