Project Updates:
Sept. 3, 3036:
Beginning the morning of Friday, Sept. 4, 2026, the pedestrian crossing at 4th Street and Euclid Avenue will temporarily move to 5th Street and Euclid Avenue in Pierre.
The estimated three-week temporary move of the pedestrian crossing is necessary while the west side of the 4th Street and Euclid Avenue intersection is reconstructed.
Pedestrian signs and a crosswalk will be placed at 5th Street. Crossing guards will be present when school children are utilizing the intersection in the mornings and afternoons.
Commuters should reduce their speed when traveling through the work zone and be alert for pedestrians, construction workers, and construction equipment.

Aug. 28, 2026:
Anticipated Work in Sept. 2026:
Euclid Avenue (Broadway Avenue to Elizabeth Street)
Sidewalk and access work is expected to be completed on both sides of Euclid Avenue. The contractor anticipates finishing red boulevard concrete and ADA ramp installation. Boulevard grading and topsoil placement should be nearly complete on Euclid and the side streets.
Traffic will remain in a two‑way configuration as the contractor uses the outside through lanes to complete work behind the curb and gutter.
Crosswalk markings have been placed, and permanent pavement markings are installed south of Elizabeth Street.
Traffic at Elizabeth Street will remain a four‑way stop. Traffic signal poles have been installed but will stay covered until they are activated.
Euclid Avenue (Elizabeth Avenue to Fourth Street)
Contractors will remove existing curb and gutter, asphalt surfacing and base course from the southbound lanes. Undercutting will be completed, storm sewer pipe will be installed, and new base course will be placed.
All intersections on the west side will be closed as work progresses.
Traffic will remain in a two‑way configuration in the northbound lanes until the project is complete.
Euclid Avenue (Fourth Street to the divided four‑lane north of Eighth Street)
Pavement removal, curb and gutter removal, undercut, pipe installation and base course placement will be completed in the southbound lanes. Some curb and gutter work will also be completed.
Traffic will remain in a two‑way configuration in the northbound lanes until the project is complete.
Elizabeth Avenue (Grand Avenue to Euclid Avenue)
Sidewalk grading and approach work will be completed.
Completed Work in Aug. 2026:
Euclid Avenue (Broadway Avenue to Elizabeth Street)
Work continues on the east side of Euclid Avenue. Nearly all sidewalks and accesses have been completed, and the contractor is placing red boulevard concrete and ADA ramps. Boulevard grading and topsoil placement are also nearly complete. All luminaires have been installed.
Traffic is currently in a two‑way configuration, with the contractor using the outside through lanes to complete work behind the curb and gutter.

On the east leg of Fourth Street, base course, curb and gutter, fillets, asphalt surfacing and signal poles have been installed, and the east leg has reopened. The west leg of Fourth Street is now closed.
The contractor has begun removing asphalt surfacing and base course in the southbound lanes.
Traffic will remain in a two‑way configuration in the northbound lanes until the project is complete.
Euclid Avenue (Fourth Street to the divided four‑lane north of Eighth Street)
Two lifts of asphalt have been placed on the base course for the new northbound lanes. Traffic has been shifted to a two‑way configuration in the northbound lanes while the contractor removes asphalt surfacing and base course in the southbound lanes. Undercutting has also been completed.
Traffic will remain in a two‑way configuration in the northbound lanes until the project is complete.
Elizabeth Avenue (Grand Avenue to Euclid Avenue)
Elizabeth Avenue is now open to traffic. The contractor is nearing completion of sidewalk, lighting and access work. Grading behind the curb is underway.

Aug. 27, 2026:
From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug.30, 2026, the traffic signals at the intersection of U.S. Highway 14 (Sioux Avenue) and S.D. Highway 1889 (Pierre Street) will be temporarily turned off while a new traffic signal cabinet is installed.
Traffic Impacts:
While the signals are inactive, east/west traffic on Sioux Avenue will continue through the intersection without needing to stop.
Southbound commuters utilizing Pierre Street will only be able to turn right onto Sioux Avenue after stopping at a temporary stop sign.
Commuters should proceed through the work zone at low speeds and be attentive for construction workers and equipment. Minimal delay is anticipated.

Aug. 21, 2026:
Traffic Changes:
Traffic has switched to a two-way configuration on the new pavement from Elizabeth Street through the north end of town.
Intersections at 1st Street, 2nd Street, and 4th Street are open on the east side. North of Elizabeth Street, intersections of Elizabeth Street and 6th Street are open on the west side.

Aug. 13, 2026:
Traffic continues to flow in a two-way configuration on the southbound lanes from Elizabeth Street to Fourth Street. Crews expect to shift two-way traffic to the northbound lanes the week of Aug. 17, 2026, weather permitting.
Current Work
Crews are installing curb and gutter on the east side through Fourth Street.
Asphalt paving on the new northbound lanes from Elizabeth Street is scheduled for the week of Aug. 17, 2026, depending on weather.
Work is continuing behind the curb near businesses where new asphalt has been placed.
Surface removal, waterline installation, compaction, and grading are ongoing in several locations along the corridor.
Upcoming Work
The east leg of the Fourth Street intersection is expected to reopen within the next two weeks as signal bases and concrete curb work wrap up.
The west side of Euclid Avenue at Fourth Street is open. Crews will begin work on the east side as weather allows.
Drivers should expect alternating closures at business entrances and side streets between Euclid Avenue and Governors Drive.
Schools will receive notices about changes to crosswalk access at Fourth and Fifth streets ahead of the school year.
