S.D. Highway 34 East of Madison
Project Summary:
The project includes cold milling and overlay of the existing asphalt surface on S.D. Highway 34 for approximately 7.3 miles, beginning east of Washington Street in Madison and extending to east of 462nd Avenue near the Dakota Ethanol plant, to provide a smoother, safer ride.
Additional work includes guardrail upgrades, pipe work, and new pavement markings and lighting to enhance safety and visibility for motorists.
Crews will also perform maintenance on both bridges over Silver Creek, including replacement of approach slabs and sleeper slabs, as well as grinding the bridge surface and placing a chip seal.
The project also includes full reconstruction of the intersection at 457th Avenue and Highway 34, which will be closed during construction.
Traffic impacts include a reduced speed limit of 45 mph and single-lane closures with flaggers and pilot cars guiding traffic through the work zone.
Traffic control devices, including cones, barriers, and signing, will be placed beginning Monday, April 6. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 13 with operations starting on the eastbound lane and continuing through late spring. This phase includes grading and pipe work, bridge repairs over Silver Creek, and reconstruction of 457th Avenue.
Work will then shift to the westbound lane in early summer and continue through mid-summer, including additional grading and pipe work, bridge repairs, and continued reconstruction at 457th Avenue.
Milling operations along S.D. Highway 34 are anticipated to begin in mid-August, followed by asphalt paving in late August, with both activities expected to be completed by early fall.
Remaining work includes grinding rumble strips, installation of new lighting and poles, pavement markings, traffic signs, and topsoil and seeding. The overall project is expected to be completed in early October, weather permitting. The schedule is subject to change due to adverse weather conditions and other unforeseen circumstances.
