S.D. Highway 10 - Bridge Replacement at Sand Lake

Project Summary:

This project consists of the replacement of bridge structure to improve water capacity over the James River (Sand Lake) on S.D Highway 10 west of Houghton.

Highway 10 will be closed to through traffic during the bridge replacement project.

Motorists should plan to use an alternative route. A signed detour route will be provided using U.S. Highway 281 and S.D. Highway 37.

Project Updates:

Aug. 18, 2025: 

July 15–Aug. 15, 2025, Completed work: Crews drove the abutment 2 H piles, received the remaining steel girders, and set them in place. They also began final preparations for placing concrete deck forms.

Anticipated work Aug. 15–Sept. 15, 2025: Crews plan to place reinforcing steel, pour and cure the concrete deck, and start work on barriers and approach grades. The open-water channel will keep S.D. Highway 10 fully closed to traffic; follow detour directions at the link below.
