S.D. Highway 10 - Bridge Replacement at Sand Lake

Project Summary:

This project consists of the replacement of bridge structure to improve water capacity over the James River (Sand Lake) on S.D Highway 10 west of Houghton.

Highway 10 will be closed to through traffic during the bridge replacement project.

Motorists should plan to use an alternative route. A signed detour route will be provided using U.S. Highway 281 and S.D. Highway 37.

Project Updates:

May 20, 2025: 

April 15, 2025 – May 15, 2025, Completed Work: The crew removed the west abutment and drove new piles. They also dewatered, excavated, installed Type B fabric and riprap, and covered with previously excavated muck. Crews pulled sheet piles and moved to install sheet piles on the east side of the bridge and continued demolition of east portion of the bridge. 

Anticipated work May 15, 2025 – June 15, 2025: The contractor intends to remove the east abutment of the existing bridge as well as the old piles and drive the new piles. Crews will work on dewatering the area. The contractor may pour bent two piles, pier cap, and west abutment one. Bridge demolition will keep S.D. Highway 10 completely closed to traffic.
