Oct. 27, 2025: 

Sept. 15, 2025 – Oct. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
The contractor continued sidewalk installation along S.D. Highways 212/79 through Newell. Sidewalk work on the west side was completed, and crews have transitioned to the east side. At the southern intersection of S.D. Highways 212/79, grading and shaping for the new alignment progressed, and base course material was placed in preparation for the future roadway surface. The contractor also began placing new surfacing on the mainline highway between Newell and Nisland.

Anticipated Work Oct. 15, 2025 – Nov. 15, 2025:
Sidewalk construction in Newell will continue along the east side of S.D. Highways 212/79, followed by final grading and cleanup on both sides once installation is complete. At the southern intersection, regrading and base course placement are expected to be completed, with new asphalt surfacing to follow. Work will also continue on the mainline surfacing between Newell and Nisland.

Aug. 6, 2025: 

On Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, work will begin on an intersection improvement project that will reconstruct the southern intersection of U.S. Highway 212 and S.D. Highway 79. Motorists will encounter a milled roadway surface and two-way traffic shifted to the southbound lanes on Highway 79 while the new lanes are being constructed.

A temporary all-way stop will be in place at the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 79. Drivers should use caution and be prepared for construction equipment and workers near the roadway. 

This work is part of a larger construction project to install new asphalt surfacing from Nisland to Newell, reconstruct the southern intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 79, and update the sidewalk through Newell. The overall project completion date is Friday, Nov. 14, 2025.
