S.D. Highway 46 - From Beresford to Iowa State Line

Project Summary:

This project is a fifteen-and-one-half mile-long full reconstruction of S.D. Highway 46 in Union and Lincoln Counties. The project begins at the east edge of the city of Beresford and ends at the Iowa state line. Work on this project will consist of full roadway grading, structure replacement, culvert replacement, interim surfacing, and new permanent signing.

Construction is broken into three phases and covers two construction seasons.

Phase one starts at the east edge of Beresford and ends at the S.D. Highway 11/S.D. Highway 46 intersection. Work in phase one will be completed during the 2024 season with an interim completion date of Nov. 2024.

Phase two will be from the Highway 11/ Highway 46 intersection to the Hudson curve.

Phase three will be completed under traffic from the Hudson curve to the Iowa state line. Phase two and three will be completed during the 2025 construction season.

During construction, the highway will be closed to through traffic. Access to residents and landowners adjacent to the project will be maintained, but travelers are encouraged to use the signed detour route around the project. The detour route around the project for phase one includes Interstate 29 to Lincoln County 152 and Highway 11. Phase two detour includes Highway 11 to Lincoln Co 152 and Lincoln Co 143. Phase three will be completed under traffic using temporary widening.

Project Updates:

Nov. 18, 2025:

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, S.D. Highway 46 from S.D. Highway 11 to the Iowa state line is scheduled to reopen to traffic. This portion of Highway 46 has been closed since April 2025 as part of a multi-year reconstruction project. Minor cleanup work may still be ongoing outside of the roadway shoulders. Motorists should remain alert for equipment and workers through the work zone.

The reopened section of Highway 46, which is a continuation of the grading project from the east edge of Beresford to Highway 11, has a temporary surfacing. The surfacing on the entire stretch will consist of a chip sealed blotter from the east edge of Beresford to the Iowa state line. Pavement markings and highway delineation have been completed.

With the temporary surfacing in place, motorists should expect a rougher road surface. A posted reduced speed limit of 55 mph will be in effect until final surfacing operations.
