S.D. Highway 10 - Bridge Replacement at Sand Lake

Project Summary:

This project consists of the replacement of bridge structure to improve water capacity over the James River (Sand Lake) on S.D Highway 10 west of Houghton.

Highway 10 will be closed to through traffic during the bridge replacement project.

Motorists should plan to use an alternative route. A signed detour route will be provided using U.S. Highway 281 and S.D. Highway 37.

Project Updates:

June 20, 2025: 

May 15, 2025 – June 15, 2025, Completed Work: The contractor removed the east abutment of the existing bridge as well as the old piles and drove the new piles. They also poured bent two piles, pier cap, and placed grout pads.  

Anticipated work June 15, 2025 – July 15, 2025: The contractor intends to receive steel girders and place on bent and temporary bent. They will remove abutment two and drive H piles. The demolished bridge and open channel will keep S.D. Highway 10 completely closed to traffic.
