Project Summary

• This project will include reconstructing the standard diamond interchange at exit 387, and replacing the structure over Interstate 90.

• The newly constructed corridor of Western Avenue will improve pedestrian facilities and traffic flow through the area.

• In conjunction with the SDDOT project, the City of Hartford is continuing the Western Avenue reconstruction from the Diamond Trail intersection to the north of Mickelson Road.

Project Updates:

May 5, 2026:
On Monday, May 11, 2026, traffic will be reduced to one lane on the Interstate 90 overpass on Western Avenue at Hartford (exit 387). Traffic will be controlled by a temporary stoplight. This traffic configuration is expected to remain in place until the first week of June. Drivers should plan for possible delays up to five minutes.

During this phase of construction, approach slabs and concrete pavement are being finished. Once complete, the interchange will be fully open to traffic. Minor work including grading, seeding, pavement markings, and permanent signing installation will be in process through the overall project completion date.

April 16, 2026:

Anticipated Work - April 2026:

Contractors will continue working to finish up the bridge work. Eastbound on ramp is planned to be paved and completed as well.

March 2026 Completed Work: 

The shared-use paths and sidewalks were completed. The bridge deck was poured, and other miscellaneous bridge work was finished. The eastbound on-ramp was closed, and contractors began pavement removals and grading.

April 8, 2025 - Press Release: 

On Monday, April 14, 2025, construction work begins on Interstate 90 (exit 387) at Hartford. During the construction project, lane closures will be placed at various times on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-90. Speed limits will be reduced to 65 mph through the work zone on I-90.

The project also includes work on Western Avenue from south of Jeffrey Street to Diamond Trail in Hartford. A two-way traffic configuration will be placed on Western Avenue. 

This project will include reconstructing the standard diamond interchange at exit 387 and replacing the structure over I-90. Western Avenue will be reconstructed as a three-lane roadway with a center left-turn lane, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and a shared use path. Additionally, the City of Hartford will have a project starting that extends the reconstruction of Western Avenue from Diamond Trail to the north of Mickelson Road. Motorists are asked to stay alert for workers, equipment, and slowed traffic through the work zone.
