Project Summary
- This project will include reconstructing the standard diamond interchange at exit 387, and replacing the structure over Interstate 90.
- The newly constructed corridor of Western Avenue will improve pedestrian facilities and traffic flow through the area.
- In conjunction with the SDDOT project, the City of Hartford is continuing the Western Avenue reconstruction from the Diamond Trail intersection to the north of Mickelson Road.

Project Updates:
May 20, 2025:
April 15, 2025 – May 15, 2025, Completed Work: Construction began on April 15, 2025. Contractors started work on the temporary widenings along Western Avenue and began constructing the temporary median crossovers on Interstate 90. The westbound on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp were closed, and traffic was diverted to the temporary ramps that were constructed on previous projects. In addition, contractors began building the new south bridge berm.
Anticipated work in May 15, 2025 – June 15, 2025: Contractors will continue work on the south bridge berm and start construction on the north bridge berm. Traffic will be switched over to the temporary widenings on Western Avenue, and traffic control will be installed on Western Avenue. Pavement removals will begin on the westbound on-ramp, eastbound off-ramp, and west side of Western Avenue. The bridge contractor will start driving pile and pouring concrete footings.

May 7, 2025 - Social Media Update:
Starting Friday, May 9, 2025, the existing eastbound off-ramp and westbound on-ramp at Interstate 90 exit 387 (Hartford) will be closed until ramp reconstruction is completed later this summer.
During the closure, traffic will be directed to previously constructed temporary loop ramps for entering and exiting I-90. Signage will be posted to guide drivers to the correct ramps. Access to the Interstate via these temporary ramps will remain available for the duration of the project.

April 8, 2025 - Press Release:
On Monday, April 14, 2025, construction work begins on Interstate 90 (exit 387) at Hartford. During the construction project, lane closures will be placed at various times on the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-90. Speed limits will be reduced to 65 mph through the work zone on I-90.
The project also includes work on Western Avenue from south of Jeffrey Street to Diamond Trail in Hartford. A two-way traffic configuration will be placed on Western Avenue.
This project will include reconstructing the standard diamond interchange at exit 387 and replacing the structure over I-90. Western Avenue will be reconstructed as a three-lane roadway with a center left-turn lane, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and a shared use path. Additionally, the City of Hartford will have a project starting that extends the reconstruction of Western Avenue from Diamond Trail to the north of Mickelson Road. Motorists are asked to stay alert for workers, equipment, and slowed traffic through the work zone.
