Aug. 18, 2025:

July 15–Aug. 15, 2025, Completed work: Crews began installing new sidewalk along the west side of U.S. Highway 212 and S.D. Highway 79 through Newell. They also replaced a mainline cross pipe west of the southern intersection of U.S. Highway 212 and S.D. Highway 79. Work started on regrading and reconfiguring the southern intersection, including topsoil removal within the project limits.

Anticipated work Aug. 15–Sept. 15, 2025: Sidewalk installation will continue on the west side of U.S. Highway 212 and S.D. Highway 79 before moving to the east side. Crews will also continue regrading and reconfiguring the southern intersection. This includes building up the new alignment on the northbound lane while maintaining two-way traffic on the southbound lane.

Aug. 6, 2025: 

On Monday, Aug. 11, 2025, work will begin on an intersection improvement project that will reconstruct the southern intersection of U.S. Highway 212 and S.D. Highway 79. Motorists will encounter a milled roadway surface and two-way traffic shifted to the southbound lanes on Highway 79 while the new lanes are being constructed.

A temporary all-way stop will be in place at the intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 79. Drivers should use caution and be prepared for construction equipment and workers near the roadway. 

This work is part of a larger construction project to install new asphalt surfacing from Nisland to Newell, reconstruct the southern intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 79, and update the sidewalk through Newell. The overall project completion date is Friday, Nov. 14, 2025.
