City of Mitchell - S.D. Highway 37 - From Main Street to National Guard Road

Project Summary:
The project will be regraded with new concrete and asphalt surfacing. The bridge over the Lake Mitchell Spillway will be removed and reconstructed. There will also be a shared-use path constructed to create a safer way for pedestrians and bicyclists to access Lake Mitchell and Kibbee Park.

Project Timeline:
Beginning in early April 2024, the portion of the project from 1000 feet south of the Lake Mitchell Spillway Bridge to National Guard Road will be constructed. This work is tentatively scheduled to be completed by Nov. 15, 2024.
In 2025, the south portion of the project will be constructed. This is tentatively scheduled between March 31, 2025, and Nov. 14, 2025.

April 22, 2025 - Social Media Update:
The planned detour that began Monday, April 14, 2025, on S.D. Highway 37 will continue to direct traffic onto Minnesota Street and 23rd Avenue, north of Mitchell and is expected to remain in effect until Saturday, May 17, 2025. The Minnesota Street intersection will remain modified to accommodate turning traffic during this planned detour, truck traffic should consider using an alternate route.
Motorists should be prepared for delays and a 12-foot width restriction through this area. Drivers are asked to be aware of constriction workers and equipment, and to slow down through the work zone.

April 3, 2025 - Press Release:
Beginning Monday, April 14, 2025, traffic on S.D. Highway 37 will be detoured onto Minnesota Street and 23rd Avenue, north of Mitchell. This planned detour will be in effect for two weeks to allow the completion of construction work at the junction of the Highway 37 Bypass and Main Street. The Minnesota Street intersection will be modified to accommodate turning traffic during this planned detour, however truck traffic should consider using an alternate route.
Motorists should be prepared for delays and a 12-foot width restriction through this area. Drivers are asked to be aware of constriction workers, equipment, and to slow down through the work zone. Motorists should expect congestion, slower speeds, and turning traffic during the closure.
This work is part of a larger project that will reconstruct Highway 37 in Mitchell from Main Street to National Guard Road.

March 20, 2025 - Press Release:
On Monday, March 24, 2025, construction work will resume on S.D. Highway 37 from the bridge at the Lake Mitchell Spillway through the intersection of Main Street and the S.D. Highway 37 Bypass.
All traffic will be shifted to the northbound lanes during the closure of the southbound lanes, and speed limits will be reduced to 30 mph.
Motorists should be prepared for delays and a 12-foot width restriction through this area. Drivers are asked to be aware of construction workers and equipment and to slow down through the work zone.
