U.S. Highway 81 Near Madison
U.S. Highway 81 Near Madison
Project Summary:
U.S. Highway 81 - From N of NW 9th Street in Madison to the Lake/Kingsbury/Brookings County Line
- Asphalt Concrete Resurfacing
- Full Depth Reclamation
- Intersection Improvement
Project Timeline:
Fall 2024 - Oct. 2025
Project Updates:
Sept. 17, 2025:
Aug. 15 – Sept. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
Work by Loiseau Construction
- Remaining areas of old asphalt (8–9 inches deep) were milled and reclaimed. The top 5 inches of asphalt were milled and hauled to the Madison DOT Maintenance Yard, where they were crushed and mixed with granular material to produce a base course in a 50/50 asphalt-to-granular ratio. The remaining 3–4 inches of asphalt were reclaimed along with 4 inches of below-grade material.
- Multiple blowouts occurred on the reclaimed surface due to unstable clay near the surface, which prevented proper compaction. These areas were excavated, the unstable material was removed, and the excavations were filled with base course.
- Larger areas of unstable roadway were repaired through heavy roadway shaping, a process similar to the blowouts but with the addition of drainage fabric.
Work by The Road Guy Construction
- An oil-based prime coat was sprayed over the road and covered with sand. This treatment bonds the asphalt to the gravel surface.
Anticipated Work Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, 2025:
Work by Loiseau Construction
- Roadway maintenance, including pothole repairs and mowing of grass and weeds on shoulders.
Work by Duininck
- Asphalt paving is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 9, near 220th Street on the northern end of the project. The start date may vary by up to one week depending on weather and other asphalt projects. Moving road closures up to 3 miles will be in place as paving progresses southbound.
