Interstate 90 - Near Hartford and Humboldt



Project Summary:

Interstate 90 eastbound lanes to be reconstructed from one mile west of Humboldt (exit 379) to Buffalo Ridge, (exit 390). The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with concrete surfacing, and the bridge over S.D. Highway 19 at Humboldt (exit 379) will be replaced. This project consists of grading, surfacing, bridge replacement, box culvert installation, permanent signing, and work involving future intelligent transportation systems. Upon project completion, motorists will experience a smoother driving surface.

Project Updates:

Oct. 7, 2024 - Social Media:

Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024, a temporary closure is scheduled for S.D. Highway 19 under Interstate 90 near Humboldt. The road is anticipated to re-open on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024.

The contractor will be completing cleanup work and will demobilize equipment from the site. Detour routes will be in place on S.D. Highways 38 and 42.

Sept. 26, 2024 - Press Release:

At 7 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, a temporary closure is scheduled for the Interstate 90 eastbound exit 379 on-and off-ramps at Humboldt. The closure will reopen on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024.

The contractor will be completing mainline concrete paving through the ramps. Traffic is advised to seek an alternate route prior to reaching the exit as there will not be a designated detour route in place during the closure.

Sept. 20, 2024: 

Aug. 15, 2024 – Sept. 15, 2024, Completed Work: Subgrade, pipe work, and concrete removals have finished up. Concrete paving has been completed for six miles on the east side of the project. Acceleration, deceleration, and ramps were paved at Hartford exit 387. Bridge deck, approach/sleeper slabs, and the box culvert have been completed. 

Anticipated work Sept. 15, 2024 – Oct. 15, 2024: Concrete paving will be completed on the west six and one-half miles. Asphalt shoulder paving will start. Topsoil, seeding, guardrail, and permanent signing will be installed. Miscellaneous construction items will be completed at the Humboldt exit 379 bridge.

Sept. 19, 2024 - Press Release:

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024, a temporary closure is scheduled for the Interstate 90 eastbound exit 379 on-and off-ramps at Humboldt. The day-long closure is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. and will be reopened by 7 p.m.

Contractors will be removing the existing pavement and preparing for new concrete pavement later in the week. Traffic is advised to seek an alternate route prior to reaching the exit as there will not be a designated detour route in place during the closure.

Sept. 16, 2024 - Social Media:

On Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, S.D. Highway 19 will be temporarily closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. underneath Interstate 90 near Humboldt (exit 379) for crews to work on removing bridge falsework and to demobilize equipment. This bridge project is part of the reconstruction project on I-90. Exit ramps will remain open, but vehicles will not be able to travel underneath the bridge during the closure.
