Interstate 90 - Near Hartford and Humboldt



Project Summary:

Interstate 90 eastbound lanes to be reconstructed from one mile west of Humboldt (exit 379) to Buffalo Ridge, (exit 390). The existing pavement will be removed and replaced with concrete surfacing, and the bridge over S.D. Highway 19 at Humboldt (exit 379) will be replaced. This project consists of grading, surfacing, bridge replacement, box culvert installation, permanent signing, and work involving future intelligent transportation systems. Upon project completion, motorists will experience a smoother driving surface.

Project Updates:

April 23, 2024 - Social Media: On Thursday, April 25, 2024, another temporary closure of S.D. Highway 19 underneath Interstate 90 near Humboldt exit 379 is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Contractors will continue to remove the existing bridge. Removal work is anticipated to be complete, and the roadway reopened by the end of the day Thursday, April 25, 2024. Exit ramps will remain open, but vehicles will not be able to travel underneath the bridge during the closure. Traffic will be detoured to S.D Highway 42 and S.D. Highway 38, respectively. Motorists are asked to follow the designated signs that will be in place.

April 22, 2024: 

March 15, 2024 – April 15, 2024, Completed Work: Traffic control was completed and two-way traffic was established on Friday, April 5, 2024. Contractors started working on removing the existing guardrail and milling asphalt pavement. The bridge contractor began removing the existing bridge on Interstate 90 over S.D. Highway 19 near Humboldt. Erosion and sediment control devices were installed throughout the project. 

Anticipated work in April 15, 2024 – May 15, 2024: Contractors will continue to mill existing asphalt pavement and work on the bridge near Humboldt. Temporary closures of Highway 19 will be utilized during the bridge construction process. Existing concrete pavement will be broken up and mixed into the subgrade. Dirt work and grading will begin on the east side of the project near Hartford, followed by the placement of a gravel cushion.
