Work Scheduled to Begin on U.S. Highway 212/S.D. Highway 79 in Newell

NEWELL, S.D. – On Thursday, June 26, 2025, crews will begin a sidewalk and ADA improvement project on Dartmouth Avenue (U.S. Highway 212/S.D. Highway 79) in Newell. The initial work will consist of tree removal and tree trimming. Once the tree removal work is complete, crews will transition into replacing the sidewalk and constructing other ADA improvements. 

Motorists should expect construction equipment and workers adjacent to the roadway. Minor delays are anticipated to occur as well as intermittent lane closures with flaggers and some existing parking areas temporarily blocked.

This work is part of a larger overall construction project that will install new asphalt surfacing from Nisland to Newell, reconstruct the southern intersection of Highway 212 and Highway 79, and update the sidewalk through Newell. 

The prime contractor on this $8.1 million project is Central Specialties, Inc of Alexandria, MN. The overall completion date for the project is Friday, Nov. 14, 2025.
