MITCHELL, S.D. – On Monday, April 28, 2025, construction work will begin on S.D. Highway 46 through the city of Wagner. Signed detour routes will be provided to guide motorists around the work zone.
Work on phase one of the project consists of rebuilding the roadway, water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer operations on Highway 46 from East Avenue SE to the east end of the Wagner city limits. This initial work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, Nov. 21, 2025. East Avenue SE to the east end of the Wagner city limits will be placed in a two-way traffic configuration for the duration of phase one construction.
Motorists should utilize alternate routes to avoid delays. Residents living within the work zone are asked to use caution when driving in the area and to obey all flaggers and construction signs.
The second phase will begin in spring 2026 from Grant Avenue SE to the west end of the Wagner city limits. Permanent striping will occur in 2027 to complete the project.
The City of Wagner will also be conducting a simultaneous project to install city water and sanitary sewer.
The prime contractor for this $21 million project is A & R Construction of Plainview, NE. The overall completion date for the project is June 2027.
