Road Construction on S.D. Highway 28 Will Close Road Starting April 2025 - KXLG

{KXLG – Estelline, SD} The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has announced that grading work will begin on S.D. Highway 28 near Estelline on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The project will cover the stretch of Highway 28 from Estelline east to the S.D. Highway 15 north junction.

According to the SDDOT, the grading work is scheduled to take place west of Interstate 29 from April to August 2025 and east of I-29 from August to November 2025. The timeframe is subject to change due to weather conditions.

Motorists should be aware that Highway 28 will be fully closed to through traffic during the project due to structural work beginning in April on both the west and east sides of I-29. Exceptions to the grading work include the Peg Munky Run Crossing and the I-29 interchange.

A truck detour will be in place using U.S. Highway 81, S.D. Highway 22, and S.D. Highway 15. Passenger vehicles will be detoured along Hamlin County Road A, Highway 22, and Highway 15.

The SDDOT assures that access to businesses and residents along the project route will be maintained with temporary access provided from the nearest mile line road during construction.

The $10.4 million project has been awarded to Bowes Construction Inc. of Brookings, SD, and is anticipated to be completed by November 2025.
