Project Summary:

The road surface will be replaced to provide a smoother ride. Crews will repair areas affected by fault heaves. Shoulders will be widened and paved to improve safety. Pipes will be rehabilitated to prevent future failures and improve drainage.

Project Updates:

June 25, 2026:

Anticipated Work in July 2026: Mainline asphalt paving will be completed throughout the project area. A flush seal will be applied to protect the new asphalt surface. Shoulders will be bladed to eliminate drop-offs, and final pavement markings will be installed. The project is anticipated to be substantially complete, with all traffic-impacting operations finished.

June 2026, Completed Work: Prime coat was applied to the shoulders. Blade-laid asphalt pavement was placed to fill the milled surface. Fault heave repairs were completed at two locations on S.D. Highway 34. The repairs included removing the existing pavement surface and base course, undercutting the affected areas, installing underdrains, replacing and compacting embankment material, installing new base course, and paving two lifts of asphalt. Mainline paving began and was completed on most of the S.D. Highway 34 segment.
