S.D. Highway 34 near Howes and S.D. Highway 73 South of Faith

Project Summary:

The road surface will be replaced to provide a smoother ride. Crews will repair areas affected by fault heaves. Shoulders will be widened and paved to improve safety. Pipes will be rehabilitated to prevent future failures and improve drainage.

Project Updates:

Aug. 28, 2026:

Anticipated Work in Sept. 2026: The project should be complete before September. As of Aug. 24, the only remaining work is completion of pavement marking and culvert joint repair. Both are scheduled to be finished this week.

Completed Work in Aug 2026: Luminaire poles were reset, and sidewalk panels were replaced. Rumble strips were completed at both the centerline and pavement edges. A flush seal was applied to the new asphalt. All disturbed areas were seeded, and pavement marking application has begun.

July 24, 2026:

Anticipated Work in Aug. 2026: Rumble strips will be ground into the shoulders and centerline on both routes. Flush seal will be applied to seal the asphalt surface. Sidewalk sections will be poured in Faith, and luminaires will be reinstalled on the new footings. Pavement markings will be applied to the new asphalt.

Completed Work in July 2026: Mainline asphalt paving operations were completed. Shoulders were pulled up over the asphalt edge for safety. Four luminaires in Faith were removed for relocation behind the sidewalk; they were previously located within the sidewalk. Sidewalk panels were removed, and new luminaire footings were poured.
