Vivian Corridor

Replacement of six structures is planned on S.D. Highway 248, east of the U.S. Highway 83 and S.D. Highway 248 junction, toward Draper. Work will occur over two construction seasons, beginning with the eastern structures. Traffic restrictions and weight limits will be in place. The traveling public will be routed around construction areas using on-site detours. Construction is currently scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The Pierre Area Office will administer the project.

Asphalt Resurfacing 

This project includes work in both the northbound and southbound lanes from the U.S. Highway 83 and S.D. Highway 248 junction, extending approximately eight miles in each direction. The project scope includes milling and asphalt overlay on U.S. Highway 83.

Traffic will be maintained with lane closures, flaggers, and pilot cars. Construction is currently scheduled for the 2028 construction season. The Pierre Area Office will administer the project.

Grading

Reconstruction of a four-mile segment of S.D. Highway 53 is planned from just north of River Road to the beginning of the asphalt concrete pavement. Work includes full grading and reconstruction, along with reclamation of a portion of the existing S.D. Highway 53.

Traffic will be maintained; however, restrictions are expected for overweight and overwidth loads due to the nature of the work. The Winner Area Office will administer the project.

Timeline: 2029

2 year Bridge and Concrete Surfacing Project

Replacement of the Interstate 90 Exit 212 overpass bridge and a box culvert is planned. Work will impact the westbound on-ramp and eastbound off-ramp at Exit 212. In addition, PCN 079G includes new concrete pavement on U.S. Highway 83 from the north end of the new bridge to the S.D. Highway 248 junction, extending approximately one-half mile north.

Due to the complexity of the work, the project will be completed over three construction seasons. The traveling public will be guided through a series of detours during various phases to maintain access to Exit 212, U.S. Highway 83 north to Pierre, and S.D. Highway 53 south of Interstate 90. Work will progress in phases based on bridge activities and paving operations, including scheduled ramp closures.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2029 and be completed in 2031. The Winner Area Office will administer the project.
