U.S. Highway 281 from Wolsey to Redfield
Project Summary:
The project includes milling the existing roadway and placing a new asphalt concrete overlay to provide a smoother ride for motorists. Shoulders will also be resurfaced to improve safety and provide additional recovery space for drivers.
Crews will modify the intersection to enhance traffic flow and improve safety. Lighting upgrades will increase visibility in low-light conditions. Pipe work will improve drainage, helping prevent water buildup and extending the life of the roadway.
Project Updates:
May 22, 2026:
Anticipated work in June 2026: Traffic controls, signage and lane closures with pilot vehicles and flagging stations will begin the second week of June for regrading operations starting approximately one mile south of S.D. Highway 26 for the installation of turning lanes and the realignment of U.S. Highway 281 to facilitate this transition. Pipe work will occur within this mile of Highway 281, along with pipe cleaning and rehabilitation.
Completed work in May 2026: Work is anticipated to commence in June 2026.
