Canton - U.S. Highway 18 to Interstate 29
Project Summary:
Located east of Interstate 29 at exit 62, U.S. Highway 18 connects the city of Canton to Interstate 29 with a two-lane undivided rural highway. This stretch of Highway 18 has shown increased traffic volumes in which the current two-lane highway is reaching capacity. This eight-mile segment will be reconstructed with a four-lane divided highway to accommodate the increased traffic volumes. Additionally, this project includes the replacement of existing box culverts which are sized appropriately based on watershed information.
The project includes grading, curb and gutter, storm sewer, box culvert replacement, lighting, permanent signing, pavement marking, and surfacing.

March 13, 2024 Press Release: Reconstruction to Begin on U.S. Highway 18 West of Canton
Beginning Monday, March 18, 2024, reconstruction work will begin on U.S. Highway 18 from west of Canton to east of Interstate 29. During reconstruction, speed limits will be reduced and lane widths will be restricted.
Motorists should expect delays through the work area and stay alert for workers, equipment, and sudden slowing of traffic. The prime contractor on the $45.6 million project is Reede Construction, Inc. of Aberdeen, SD. The overall completion date for the project is August 2025.
