Rapid City - Anamosa Street Bridge I-190



Project Summary:

The project consists of:
- Replacing aged structure with weight restrictions
- Replacing and improving intersections at both ends of the bridge
- Reducing light pollution in communities adjacent to Interstate 190

The purpose of this project is to replace the Anamosa Street Bridge over Interstate 190 due to aging and weight restrictions. There will be luminaires replaced along the I-190 corridor that will provide reduced light pollution for the surrounding neighborhoods. A small section of concrete paving will occur on the north end of the I-190 structure and North Street including a barrier wall and glare screen.

April 24, 2024 - Press ReleaseThe first of four temporary closures of Interstate 190 and exit 57 in Rapid City is scheduled to begin Saturday, April 27, 2024, at 5 a.m. MT and reopen on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 8 p.m. MT. The closure is being placed to allow crews to install a pedestrian bridge over I-190 on Anamosa Street.

A signed detour route will be provided to motorists around the closure utilizing exit 55 (Deadwood Avenue), exit 61 (U.S. Highway 16B), and S.D. Highway 44 (Omaha Street). This closure is part of an ongoing bridge replacement project that consists of mainline work on I-190 and replacement of the Anamosa Street Bridge.

April 22, 2024

April Completed Work: The contractor constructed crossovers at the north end south ends of Interstate 190. Construction of the temporary pedestrian bridge has begun with the closure of the Anamosa Street Bridge. Completed the abutments for the temporary pedestrian bridge. 

Anticipated work in MayComplete the installation of the temporary pedestrian bridge for the temporary pedestrian access route. Begin demolition of the existing Anamosa Street Bridge and adjust traffic to two-way in the southbound lane of I-190. Complete asphalt removal for PCC paving north of I-190 and North Street in the northbound lane.

March 15, 2024 - Press Release: On Thursday, March 21, 2024, a bridge replacement project is scheduled to begin at Anamosa Street over Interstate 190 in Rapid City.

This project consists of mainline work on I-190 and replacement of the Anamosa Street Bridge. I-190 work will consist of the construction of crossovers at both ends of I-190 to facilitate traffic flow. Existing asphalt north of North Street will be replaced with concrete and a permanent barrier with glare screen and upgrades will be made to the lighting in the corridor to reduce light pollution.

Work on Anamosa Street includes removal and replacement of the original bridge structure. Intersections at both ends of the bridge will be replaced and brought to ADA standards, and there will be a temporary pedestrian bridge installed over I-190 to assist with foot traffic.           

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on both northbound and southbound I-190, with reduced speed limits in place. Delays of up to ten minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.
