S.D. Highway 46 - From Beresford to Iowa State Line
Project Updates:
July 23, 2026:
Anticipated work in August 2026: After a delay caused by underlying grade issues, concrete paving will resume 1.5 miles west of Beresford and progress toward S.D. Highway 11. Joint sealing for the new pavement will begin once the curing period is complete. Grade-building work for the new asphalt shoulders will continue, with asphalt paving on the shoulders anticipated to start around mid‑August.
Completed work in July 2026: Joint sealing has been completed for all new pavement east of S.D. Highway 11. The grading subcontractor is working to repair soft areas in the grade ahead of resuming concrete paving.

Project Summary:
2026:
The project begins at the east edge of the City of Beresford and ends at the Iowa state line. Work on this project will consist of 8” thick concrete pavement placed 28’ wide, with 6’ wide asphalt shoulders, new pavement marking and permanent signing. In conjunction with the S.D. Highway 46 paving, S.D. Highway 11 will be resurfaced from the intersection with S.D. Highway 46 through the City of Alcester to the intersection with 302nd St.
Construction will be broken into two phases. Phase 1 starts at the east edge of Beresford and ends at the intersection with 297th St (Hudson curve). Phase 2 will be from the 297th St intersection to the Iowa state line.
During construction of Phase 1, the highway will be closed to through traffic. Access to residents and landowners adjacent to the project will be maintained, but travelers are encouraged to use the signed detour route around the project. The detour route around the project for Phase 1 includes Interstate 29 to Lincoln Co 152 to Lincoln Co 143 back to S.D. Highway 46. Phase 2 will be completed under traffic using temporary widening.
The contractor will be discussing individual access with each landowner located on or near the project.
2024-2025:
This project is a fifteen-and-one-half mile-long full reconstruction of S.D. Highway 46 in Union and Lincoln Counties. The project begins at the east edge of the city of Beresford and ends at the Iowa state line. Work on this project will consist of full roadway grading, structure replacement, culvert replacement, interim surfacing, and new permanent signing.
Construction is broken into three phases and covers two construction seasons.
Phase one starts at the east edge of Beresford and ends at the S.D. Highway 11/S.D. Highway 46 intersection. Work in phase one will be completed during the 2024 season with an interim completion date of Nov. 2024.
Phase two will be from the Highway 11/ Highway 46 intersection to the Hudson curve.
Phase three will be completed under traffic from the Hudson curve to the Iowa state line. Phase two and three will be completed during the 2025 construction season.
During construction, the highway will be closed to through traffic.
