U.S. Highway 18 Bridge Repair Near Winner

Project Updates:

Oct. 31, 2025: 

Sept. 15, 2025 – Oct. 15, 2025, Completed Work:
All jackhammering and concrete removals were completed on the Dog Ear Creek Bridge. The new low-slump dense concrete overlay was placed this month. Concrete removals for approach repairs, sleeper slab repair, and curb and gutter work were completed. New asphalt was placed for the new guardrail at the Dog Ear Creek Bridge. Seeding and erosion control were completed at the Big Hollow Creek Bridge.

Anticipated Work Oct. 15, 2025 – Nov. 15, 2025:
The contractor will complete the new 8.5-inch concrete pavement on the east side of the Dog Ear Creek Bridge. New curb and gutter will be installed, and new sidewalk and approach slab repairs will be poured. All work on this phase is expected to be completed within the next month. Traffic control devices will be removed, and new pavement markings will be installed.

May 20, 2025 - Press Release: 

Beginning Tuesday, May 27, 2025, work is scheduled to begin on several bridges near Winner. The repair areas will be the following bridges:

•    Bridge over Cottonwood Creek; located seven miles west of Winner on U.S. Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Big Hollow Creek; located three miles west of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Dog Ear Creek; located on the western edge of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over the West Branch of Thunder Creek; located one and one-half miles southeast of Winner on Highway 18;
•    Bridge over Thunder Creek; located three and one-half miles southeast of Winner on Highway 18; and
•    Bridge over Moccasin Creek; located on S.D. Highway 49 near Hamill.

Work at each location will consist of concrete removal and repair of the existing bridge decks followed by a low slump dense concrete overlay. The bridge over Dog Ear Creek will also consist of new approach slabs and concrete paving off the east end of the bridge. Work will be done in phases with one lane of the bridges being worked on at a time while the other lane remains open to traffic. Traffic at each location will be controlled by temporary traffic signals or stop signs. An 18-foot width restriction will be enforced on all bridges located on Highway 18 and an 11-foot width restriction will be enforced on the bridge over Moccasin Creek (Highway 49 near Hamill). 

Traffic control is scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the bridge over Cottonwood Creek and the bridge over Big Hollow Creek. On Thursday, May 29, 2025, traffic control will also be installed at the bridge over Dog Ear Creek.
