Surfacing Project Scheduled to Begin on U.S. Highway 81 in Watertown

WATERTOWN, S.D. –  On Tuesday April 8, 2025, a surfacing project is scheduled to begin on U.S. Highway 81 in Watertown. The project will begin one quarter mile north of 20th Avenue SE in Watertown to the east junction of S.D. Highway 22 and Highway 81. The 10-mile surfacing project on Highway 81 includes cold milling asphalt concrete, asphalt concrete resurfacing, and culvert repairs. 

Highway 81 will remain open to traffic for the entirety of the construction project. Traffic will be controlled by a pilot car and flaggers once milling and asphalt overlay begin. 

The primary contractor for the $6.1 million project is Duininck Inc., of Watertown, SD.  The overall project completion date is October 2025.
