ARLINGTON, S.D. – On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, a lane closure is scheduled for approximately six miles on U.S. Highway 81 from 220th Street to 211th Street near Arlington. After this project is complete, a second project on Highway 81 will begin near Freeman. A lane closure will in place for approximately 14 miles from 278th Street to S.D. Highway 42.

Project work at both locations includes placement of centerline rumble strips and new pavement markings. Weather dependent, both projects are anticipated to be complete within three weeks.

Motorists should be prepared for delays. Drivers are asked to be aware of construction workers and equipment adjacent to the driving lanes, and to slow down through the work zone. Motorist should expect congestion, very slow speeds, and stopped traffic conditions during the morning and evening peak times.

The contractor for the $1.26 million project is Surface Preparation Technologies, LLC., of Waite Park, MN. The overall project completion date is September 2025.
