Interstate 90 Lane Closures Planned for Reconstruction Project at Piedmont (Exit 46)

PIEDMONT, S.D. – Beginning on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, lane closures are scheduled on Interstate 90 between exit 44 and exit 48 near Piedmont. Traffic will be limited to a single lane in each direction as work occurs on new exit ramps, bridge foundations, and drainage structures. The speed limit will be reduced to 65 mph through the work zone. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph when workers are present. The westbound and eastbound lane closures are anticipated to remain in place through November 2026.

This work is part of a project that includes the full reconstruction of exit 46 and portions of Elk Creek Road and Sturgis Road in Piedmont. This multi-year project includes new exit ramps, a new bridge over I-90, elimination of an at-grade railroad crossing on Elk Creek Road by building a bridge over the railroad, replacement of drainage structures, and new concrete pavement on I-90 between exit 44 and mile marker 47.

The prime contractor for this $77.7 million project is Heavy Constructors, Inc. of Rapid City, SD. The overall project completion date is December 2028.
