Chip Seal and Fog Seal Projects Planned in the Mitchell Area

MITCHELL, S.D. – Beginning on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, chip seal and fog seal applications will be applied to several highways in the Mitchell surrounding area. The contractor will move from one project to the next in the following order:

·          S.D. Highway 38 – the project begins from the junction of U.S. Highway 81 at Salem and runs 17 miles east to Humboldt. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in three days and the fog seal will take an additional two days;

·          U.S. Highway 81 – the project begins from the junction of S.D. Highway 38 at Salem and runs one mile north to the north edge of Salem. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day;

·          S.D. Highway 262 and S.D. Highway 42 – the project begins from the junction of S.D. Highway 262 and S.D Highway 42 at Bridgewater and runs five miles east to the junction of U.S. Highway 81. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day;

·          S.D. Highway 46 – the project begins just west of the junction of 393 Avenue located west of Wagner and runs one mile east to Wagner. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in one day and the fog seal will take an additional day; and

·          U.S. Highway 18  - this shoulder project begins at Dallas and runs 13 miles east to where the concrete ends east of Burke. The chip seal work on this section is anticipated to be complete in two days and the fog seal will take an additional day.

For all projects, traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. Delays up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

Loose gravel will be present for a period of four to 48 hours after each day’s chip seal application. Traffic should travel at 40 mph or the speed limit, if it is less than 40 mph, during this time frame. The permanent pavement marking is scheduled to be applied within 14 days of completion of the chip and fog seal projects.

The prime contractor on this $1.8 million project is The Road Guy Construction Company, Inc. from Yankton, SD. The overall project completion date is Friday, Sept. 26, 2025.
