Bridge Replacement Project to Begin on S.D. Highway 34 Near Union Center

UNION CENTER, S.D. – On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, crews will begin a project to remove the bridge over East Elm Creek on S.D. Highway 34 located seven miles west of Union Center. The bridge will be replaced with a box culvert. 

Traffic will be carried around the structure work with a temporary gravel surface diversion. Motorists should be aware that the speed limit will be reduced to 25mph through the work zone and a 16-foot width restriction will be in place. 

The prime contractor on the $1.74 million project is Midwest Contracting, LLC from Marshall, MN. The project completion date is Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025.
