SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week and South Dakota transportation officials are reminding drivers to stay alert and slow down.
Work zones are designed to protect both road crews and drivers, but the DOT said distractions and speeding still cause crashes.
That’s why the department has teamed up with law enforcement and contractors to spread the word.
“It takes a lot of effort. We got a lot of partners with our contractors, and law enforcement to really promote that message, and the billboard program, we got a great way to do that. And just want to be out there and reminding drivers don’t be distracted, stay focused, obey the speed limit, and just be aware of your surroundings coming into a work zone,” said Craig Smith, SDDOT Director of Operations.
Two major projects in Sioux Falls are the reconstruction of the Veterans and Arrowhead Parkways intersection, as well as the work being done near Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229.
Officials are asking drivers to use caution when traveling through these areas.
