SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) is winding down from an extremely busy past few weeks, where highways saw thousands of travelers from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
SDDOT broke down the numbers, and the 2025 Rally saw an 11.3% increase in travelers over vehicle count averages from 2020-2024. The total vehicle count was 537,459.
According to SDDOT, staff members spend months preparing the infrastructure to handle such high traffic volumes. Now that the rally is over, things have gone back to a normal operation mode.
Safety was a top priority for SDDOT staff, and they said that it’s not a simple nor easy process to prepare for the rally, but the hard work of their staff doesn’t go unnoticed.
SDDOT shared a message they received this week from a 2025 Sturgis Rally attendee:
“Just want to give a shout out to the people that made sure the roads during “Sturgis” were clear. I rode over 1,000 miles on my recent trip there. I did not see one road kill, tree branch or rocks on any of the roads I was on. THANK YOU!!!!!” – Scott.
