Mitchell Republic: I-90 re-open at Mitchell Exit 332 in time for busier August traffic
The opening is timely with increased traffic expected with the Palace City Pre-Sturgis Party and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally activities this week, plus Dakotafest later this month.
MITCHELL, S.D. – South Dakota Department of Transportation officials said Interstate 90 and Exit 332 at Mitchell re-opened on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026 after being closed for most of the last four months.
In a press release, the I-90 roadway over the railroad bridges near exit 332 is fully reopened to traffic. The reopening also includes the eastbound on-ramp at exit 332 to I-90.
The opening is timely with increased traffic expected with the Palace City Pre-Sturgis Party and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally activities this week, plus Dakotafest later this month.
The project detour currently in place will be removed. The temporary signal lights at Exit 330 will be placed in flash mode for two days to allow traffic to become accustomed to the changed conditions. The signal lights at exit 330 will be fully removed on Thursday, Aug. 6, and the intersection will return to its original traffic condition prior to construction.
According to the SDDOT, the project included replacing bridge approach slabs and joints to provide a smoother transition on and off the structures. Berm repairs and improvements to the approach pavement were also made to enhance ride quality and extend the life of the roadway.
A polymer chip seal was applied to help protect the surface from moisture and wear. Guardrail upgrades were made to improve roadside safety, and an acceleration lane was constructed to allow drivers to safely merge into traffic.
The T&R Construction of Sioux Falls was the lead contractor for the $2.7 million paving project. The overall project completion date is October 2026.
