The Watertown Area’s newest celebrity isn’t a person, but a massive piece of machinery named "Scraping By." On Thursday, March 5, the man behind the moniker, Mike Marshall of Bryant, visited the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Hayti Maintenance Shop to officially "meet" the snowplow he named.

Marshall was one of 12 winners selected across the state this year in the SDDOT’s annual Snowplow Naming Contest. The event in Hayti allowed Marshall to see his creative entry emblazoned on the equipment and meet the crew that will operate it during South Dakota’s winter storms.

This year marks the sixth anniversary of the popular contest. Since its inception, 72 snowplows have been given unique monikers submitted by the public. Each year, the SDDOT selects twelve names—one for each of the department’s 12 regions—to help bring awareness to winter maintenance and road safety.

"Scraping By" now joins the ranks of other cleverly named plows in the SDDOT fleet, including this year's fellow winners like "Rhinestone Plowboy," “Buzz Ice Clear,” and “ Sleddy Roosevelt.”
