KELO: Rural Bridges Selected to Receive Planning Grants

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Twelve rural South Dakota bridges in need of repair or replacement will receive federal financial assistance for design.
Another 24 rural structures will receive state Bridge Improvement Grant awards for planning and engineering.
The South Dakota Transportation Commission approved the selections on Thursday. The state Department of Transportation used a scoring system to rank the projects.
The department received 70 applications for federal assistance and 38 applications for state grants.
Decisions on grants for replacement or rehabilitation of bridges are made in the spring round.
“This is not construction or any rehab,” state Transportation Secretary Joel Jundt said.
The bridge locations and the amounts of federal design grants, listed in order of scoring, are:
Yankton County, southwest of Mission Hill on 309th Street over the James River, $291,742 federal assistance toward $356,000 cost.
Gregory County, southwest of St. Charles on 354th Avenue over Ponca Creek, $278,630 federal assistance toward $340,000 cost.
Deuel County, 2nd Avenue in Gary, over the west branch of Lac Qui Parle River, $87,000 federal assistance.
Deuel County, Lac Qui Parle Street in Gary, over the west branch of Lac Qui Parle River, $43,100 federal assistance.
Roberts County, southeast of Wilmot on 138th Street over the north fork of Whetstone River, $78,000 federal assistance.
Spink County, northeast of Redfield on 388th Avenue over James River, $376,000 federal assistance.
Grant County, northeast of Milbank on 144th Street over the north fork of the Whetstone River, $192,000 federal assistance.
Grant County, southeast of Milbank on 487th Avenue over the north fork of Yellow Bank River, $192,000 federal assistance.
Meade County, northeast of Sturgis on Wilcox Road over East Elm Creek, $185,000 federal assistance.
Codington County, southeast of Florence on 162nd Street over the Big Sioux River, $191,100 federal assistance.
Deuel County, northeast of Brandt on 187th Street over Cobb Creek, $81,000 federal assistance.
McCook County, west edge of Montrose on 451st Avenue over a tributary to the east fork of the Vermillion River, $87,000 federal assistance.
