KELO: Meetings are set on SDDOT’s 2027 highway projects

Two online meetings will be held next month for public input regarding South Dakota’s tentative 2027 plan for road and bridge projects.
The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, July 14, at 2 p.m. CT and for Thursday, July 16, at 7 p.m. CT.
Members of the South Dakota Transportation Commission on Thursday received a briefing on the tentative 2027 plan.
The commission will give final approval at its August 27 meeting to what’s officially known as the 2027-2030 Surface Transportation Improvement Plan.

There are also four locations where people can go to take part in the two meetings:
SDDOT’s Aberdeen regional office, 2735 U.S. Highway, Aberdeen
SDDOT’s central administration office, 700 E. Broadway Avenue, Pierre
SDDOT’s Rapid City regional office, 2300 Eglin Street, Rapid City
SDDOT’s Sioux Falls area office, 5316 W. 60th Street North, Sioux Falls
Written comments on the 2027 tentative plan also may be submitted via SDDOT’s STIP page by July 31, 2026.
Last year 815 people participated in the comment process, the department’s planning and engineering director, Mike Behm, said Thursday.
Behm told the Transportation Committee that federal funding remains unknown beyond September 30, when the current program expires.
The tentative 2027 STIP calls for roughly $700 million of federal funding and $234 million of state funding.
The $934.3 million in total spending includes $645.6 million for highway projects, $176 million for bridge projects, $85.2 million for safety projects and $27.3 for various other projects.
The commission approved the 2026 STIP on August 28, 2025. It called for more than $1.1 billion in spending, including $597.3 million on roads, $393 million on bridges, $83.2 million on safety and $52.1 million on various other projects.
