How South Dakota travelers can stay safe this winter with heavy snow expected - KOTA
For the last couple of years, especially last year, winters in South Dakota have been milder than usual, yet that streak may be coming to an end.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service, Aaron Woodward, said they are predicting the La Niña weather pattern to break down and transition into a neutral cycle by December.
“That neutral cycle kind of getting really into full effect in that January-February time frame,” said Woodward. “That could open the door for us to have more of those more significant, impactful heavy snowstorms to move through the Black Hills area.”
To help people prepare their traveling plans for the upcoming winter, Thursday, the South Dakota Department of Transportation, along with the South Dakota Highway Patrol and NWS, held a webinar.
