SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - The 10th and 11th Street viaducts will be torn down and rebuilt over the next decade, and Sioux Falls residents will have a chance to help shape what comes next.
Ownership of the aging structures was transferred from the South Dakota Department of Transportation to the city of Sioux Falls. However, the DOT is still responsible for the replacements.
There are currently four options to choose from for new viaducts. The 10th Street viaduct is tentatively scheduled to be rebuilt in 2032, and the 11th Street viaduct in 2036.
Andy Berg, city engineer for Sioux Falls Public Works, said there aren’t any preferred options yet.
“That’s part of this public meeting: to gain that citizen-resident feedback, and that’ll help inform the preferred option with the environmental process,” Berg said. “Each option has different impacts. So, some of the options affect the park system differently on each side of the river. While there can be impacts to the parks because of the alignment of the roadways, we’re also looking to provide improvements. for the park system with better connectivity to the trail system and to the parks themselves.”
The Department of Transportation will host its third community meeting on Tuesday, October 27, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn City Centre.
The next steps will include reviewing the environmental assessment and screening report, which will help regulate and improve the area.
Berg said the project also aims to improve multimodal transportation through the corridor.
“Getting those multimodal transportation modes improved through the corridor, so there’s connections to the bike trail system on both sides of the river, and then also the comfort level of the pedestrians as they do cross the viaducts,” Berg said. “Right now, they’re narrow sidewalks and not a lot of space for people, and so improving that feel or that comfort level of the pedestrians as they go through.”
People who cannot attend the meeting in person can still watch online or submit comments until Tuesday, November 10. More information on the full project can be found here.
