361K pounds of concrete I-229 bridge to open soon - Keloland
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Drivers should be able to travel on a new Interstate 229 bridge deck built with more than 2.8 million pounds of concrete and sand in Sioux Falls, an official said Thursday.
Harry Johnston, an engineer with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, said an aggregate mix that includes sand and concrete accounts for the 2.8 million pounds.
The deck has 740 cubic yards of concrete, which equates to 361,000 pounds of cement, Johnston said.
“It’s a pretty substantial amount of concrete,” he said.
But it’s a substantial project at the I-229 and Cliff Avenue interchange that started in 2024. It has a budget of nearly $50 million, which Johnston said the project is meeting.
Mid-November is a key time for the project. The bridge at the Cliff Avenue intersection for southbound traffic will open in mid-November, along with the southbound entrance and exit ramps, Johnston said.
