Walworth County - S.D. Highway 47 Grading from Jct. U.S. Highway 212

Project Overview and Detour Map:

Project Summary:

Project Summary: This 14-mile project involves the complete reconstruction of SD47 including the replacement of the narrow bridge (4 miles north of the SD20 junction) with a box culvert.  Installation of a box culvert at this location will eliminate the narrow bridge crossing and eliminate the need for any guardrail whatsoever. This once narrow highway with no shoulders, upon completion, will have two 12’ driving lanes along with 6’ shoulders.  The new grade line will provide travelers with improved sight distance, flatter inslopes and wider ditches that will allow for more snow storage capacity.
Location: SD47 fm Jct. SD20 west of Hoven to Jct. US12 in Walworth County

Project Timeline:

This two-year project is scheduled for completion by October 27, 2023.  Once work begins in 2022, the road will be closed to local traffic only, with thru-traffic being detoured via SD20, US83 and US12.  Full traffic will be restored to Hwy 47 during the winter months, but the detour will be in place when work resumes in the spring of 2023.

The driving lanes will be a gravel/oil blotter surface until it is ultimately surfaced with asphalt pavement (under a separate contract) in 2024.

Project Updates:

The preconstruction meeting for this project was held on May 5th.  The contractor has mobilized some equipment and plans to start building the diversion for the bridge replacement (4 miles north of SD20 jct.) in the last week of May.  Once the diversion is complete, the existing bridge will be removed, and work will begin on the 4 barrel 12’ x 12’ box culvert that will replace it.

Contractor plans to close the road to thru traffic around the end of May or first part of June.  At that time, traffic will be detoured west on SD20, north on US83 and east on US12.  Although this is a two-year project, the contractor is required to have SD47 re-opened to all traffic by November 23, 2022.  SD47 will then remain open until the contractor resumes work in the spring no earlier than April 3, 2023.
