Western Ave Interchange and Interstate 229

PROJECT COMPLETE

Project Summary:

Located on the southwest side of Sioux Falls on Western Ave, is a two-span steel girder bridge built in 1994 that crosses over I-229 at Exit 2. The current bridge 50-191-238 has a 90 ft wide roadway that carries traffic and pedestrians over I-229. The bridge will receive new approach slabs, overlay, and pedestrian railing for this project. In addition, the Northbound on ramp will be reconstructed to accommodate higher traffic volumes in the area.

The project will include the reconstruction of the North Bound on Ramp to Interstate 229 and the refurbishing of the Bridge End pavement. The project will be performed in two main phases to perform the bridge end pavement. Phase 1 will focus on the north bound lanes on the bridge structure and pavement as well as the NB onramp reconstruction. Phase 2 will focus on the south bound lanes of the bridge structure and pavement. The Traffic control lighting will also be done with this project.

During phase 1 the Western Avenue traffic will be diverted from two lanes north and south into one lane north and south. In phase 1 the north bound  onramp will be closed to traffic. During phase 2 the Western Avenue traffic will be again diverted for the second half of the bridge structure and pavement.
