S.D. Highway 52 near Yankton

Project Summary:

This project includes shoulder widening, guardrail work, pipe extensions, concrete pavement repair, curb and gutter repair, cold milling, and asphalt concrete surfacing on S.D. Highway 52 from its junction with S.D. Highway 50 to Summit Street in Yankton, S.D.

The asphalt section of S.D. Highway 52, which extends from S.D. Highway 50 junction to approximately five miles south, consists of 12’ lanes and 4’ shoulders currently. These shoulders will be removed, the slopes widened, and new 8’ shoulders will be constructed. This stretch of highway also includes two bridges near the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area. These bridges will undergo maintenance including concrete repair and the replacement of the guardrail. Culvert and pipe work includes extending pipes as needed due to the widening, resetting any pipe ends that may have shifted throughout the years, boring and jacking new pipe under the roadway, and the installation of erosion control measures at the ends of culverts as needed.

The concrete portion of S.D. Highway 52, which extends from the Lewis and Clark Recreation Area main entrance at its west end to West City Limits Road on its east, will undergo pavement repair. This involves the removal of broken-up concrete and its replacement.

Curb and gutter work will take place within the Yankton city limits from West City Limits Road to Summit Street. This work involves replacing several drop inlets and drainage structures as well as updating sidewalk areas to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA Compliance). The intersection of S.D. Highway 52 and West City Limits Road will also be modified to accommodate turning local truck traffic.

Lastly, all asphalt concrete surfaces will be milled to provide a smooth surface and new asphalt concrete pavement will be placed throughout the entire length of the project.
