Project Summary: 

On Omaha Street from LaCrosse Street intersection to Covington Street

ADA Curb Ramp Upgrades, Sidewalk, Traffic Signals, Intersection Improvement and Right of Way

This project includes the complete reconstruction of LaCrosse Street intersection including underground utilities, partial reconstruction of Cambell Street intersection (removal of islands and construction of right turn lanes on Omaha Street, new pedestrian signals at the intersections of Mickelson Drive, St. Patrick Street, WB US 16B Ramp, Twilight Drive, Elderberry Road, new traffic signals at LaCrosse Street, Cambell Street, and Jolly Lane.  This project also includes storm sewer at various locations, and sidewalk to connect the entire corridor. 

Project Benefits:  Provides an ADA compliant walking path with pedestrian signal controls on Omaha Street from LaCrosse Street to Covington Drive.  This project also upgrades the LaCrosse Street intersection with new underground utilities, new PCC pavement, sidewalk, and new a traffic signal with pedestrian signal controls.  At the intersection of Cambell Street and Omaha Street, a safety improvement will be accomplished with the removal of the islands at each corner that will be replaced with right turn lanes on Omaha Street with upgrades to the traffic signal, pedestrian signal control, and new sidewalk.

Project Updates: 

July 31, 2023:

July Completed WorkCrews completed the punchlist work items and the repairs needed for the City Utility contract.  The traffic signal at the LaCrosse and Omaha Street intersection was energized.  All lane closures have been taken down and LaCrosse Street closure was removed along with the detour signs.  The project has reached substantial completion.   

Anticipated work in August:   None

June 22, 2023:

June Completed Work
Crews completed concrete removals,sanitary sewer, and storm sewer work on the north half of the intersection.  Undercut and grading on Omaha Streetare complete and base course is being placed in preparation for mainline paving.  Grading and undercut work remain on LaCrosse Streetfor concretepaving and curb and gutter.  Installation of conduit and detector loops for the new traffic signal needs to be installed on LaCrosse Street.          

Anticipated work in July:  Complete sidewalk, traffic signal footing, and installation of the remaining traffic signal poles.  Expect to move traffic to the driving lanes on Omaha Street to repair a broken tee on the new sanitary sewer manhole in the center lane on Omaha Street Expect to complete all work in the center lane and open the intersection to all lanes.

May 25, 2023:

May Completed WorkCrews completed PCC paving, curb and gutter, sidewalk, pavement markings, and installed traffic signals on the south half of the LaCrosse St. & Omaha St. Intersection. Crews opened the south half of the intersection to traffic on May 8, 2023, and closed the north half to allow crews to begin concrete pavement removal, remove existing traffic signals, and begin sanitary sewer work. 

Anticipated Work in June: Grading for PCC pavement, completing storm sewer, curb and gutter, sidewalk, installation of traffic signals and poles, and permanent pavement markings.

May 3, 2023:

On Monday, May 8, 2023, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) plans to reopen the south half of the intersection at LaCrosse Street and Omaha Street in Rapid City.  At that time, the SDDOT will close the north half of this intersection to complete the project. The project includes a complete reconstruction of the Omaha Street and Lacrosse Street intersection with new underground utilities, new PCC pavement, a sidewalk, and new traffic signals with pedestrian signal controls. April 24, 2023:


April Completed Work: 
Crews are primarily working on the sanitary sewer for the City Utility project.  Crews are also working on storm sewer installation and are beginning to undercut the grade.  
 

Anticipated work in May:  Curb and gutter, fillets, mainline paving, sidewalk, and installation of the new traffic signal & footings.

August 11, 2022: RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says work at the intersection of Omaha Street and Cambell Street in Rapid City is scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 15, 2022. The work will consist of adding an additional right turn lane, removal of median islands, sidewalk and storm sewer improvements, and construction of a shared-use path. Read More
