Hwy 46 from Centerville to Irene - Shoulder Widening and Spot Grading

Project Information:

Shoulder Widening, Spot Grading, Pipe Work, Structures, Mill & AC Surfacing and Resurfacing

The project is a 9.4-mile long shoulder widening and spot grading project that includes the extension and/or replacement of pipe culverts, 2 new box culverts, and one box culvert extension. 6.4 miles will be shoulder widening and 3.0 miles will be full regrading. The finished surface will be 2-12’ driving lanes with 8’ paved shoulders. The project will be completed in 2 phases with separate detours.

The first phase of construction is from Highway 19 Northeast to Centerville and the detour for that will be on Highways 19 and 19A. Local traffic will be maintained in the shoulder widening sections by the use of flaggers and a pilot car. The Contractor started work in the second phase early in April and is working from east to west.

The second phase is from Irene to Highway 19 North and the detour for this phase will be on Highways 81, 18, and 19. This phase will start after Highway 46 traffic is restored to the first phase as both detours will not be up at the same time.

Asphalt will be placed on the shoulders in the shoulder widening sections and full width in the grading sections later this season. A separate project will be let to put the final lift on the shoulder widening section next year.

This project is expected to take most of the summer into early fall to complete.

Hwy 46 from Centerville to Irene – Asphalt Concrete Surfacing

Project:

This project is the placement of the new asphalt concrete surface on last year’s shoulder widening/grading project for this stretch of Hwy 46. The project consists of removing the in-place asphalt mainline and gravel shoulders, surface prepping and the application of prime oil on the remaining gravel surface and then placing 3 lifts of Q3 Asphalt Concrete totaling 5.5 inches thick.

The finished product will be 2-12’ driving lane with 8’ paved shoulders. The removed material is being blended with virgin gravel and being stockpiled for use on a future grading project on Hwy 46 that will be east of Beresford.

The Contractor has started removing the in-place surfacing at the west end of the project working east. Traffic is being maintained by the use of flaggers and a pilot car.

Work on this project is expected to be completed by mid-summer.

Project Update:

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction starting on Friday, April 9, 2021. A 14-foot width restriction will be in effect for the duration of the project. An over width detour using Highway 50L (Cherry Street) through the city of Vermillion has been established. During the project, access will be maintained for local residents and businesses.
