I90 Eastbound McCook CountyLocation: I90 Eastbound from 2 miles West of the Salem Interchange (US81) to 2 miles West of the Humboldt Interchange (SD38)
PCN: 05HP
Work: This project is a 15-mile interstate reconstruction project in the eastbound lanes of I90 in McCook County. Two bridges and one box culvert will be removed and replaced, and another bridge will be resurfaced. The purpose of the project is to improve the condition of the roadway surfacing and replace bridge structures due to age. The eastbound Salem rest area will be closed for the duration of the project and is being upgraded by a different contractor. Efforts will be made to maintain traffic to the eastbound on- and off-ramps within the construction limits for as long as possible, however, there may be times during the concrete paving operation when this is not achievable. Westbound ramps should be unaffected by the project.

SD Highway 42 at the James River, 8 miles East of EthanProject Information:
The SD 42 bridge over the James River is being replaced due to age and condition. The new structure will be over 200’ longer than the old structure to allow for a larger waterway opening for flood flows. The new structure will also be 6’ wider than the old structure, which will provide a 6’ shoulder on the outside of each 12’ lane. The roadway leading up to the structure at both ends of the bridge will be re-graded and paved with asphalt.
During construction, the Contractor encountered unexpected subsurface soil conditions which ultimately delayed the project. The current schedule indicates that construction should be completed in late November 2021.
With the bridge out, traffic is being detoured on SD 37, SD 44, and US 81.

SD 38 bridge over West Fork Vermillion River, 2 miles West of SalemProject Information:
The bridge over the West Fork Vermillion River near Salem is being replaced due to damage from flooding occurring in 2019. The soil supporting the pier columns was eroded away due to fast-flowing water during the floods, which created a potential for failure if the bridge was opened to traffic.
As a short-term fix, a temporary steel truss bridge was installed spanning over the old bridge. The temporary bridge allowed for traffic to get through, but it was limited to a single 11’ wide lane, meaning through traffic needed to stop before crossing. The temporary bridge was also hit by an oversized load, requiring the bridge to be closed for about a week while maintenance forces repaired and replaced damaged components.
The roadway is now closed and the old structure removed to allow for construction of the new bridge. The new structure uses a deeper steel H-pile foundation which will hold up better against flood flows. The new structure will also be about 140’ longer to allow for a larger channel opening for floodwater, and will be 6’ wider to provide a 12’ driving lane and 6’ shoulder in each direction. The approach roadway will be re-graded and paved with asphalt as part of the project. The bridge will be finished and the roadway is expected to be opened to traffic by December 10, 2021. The Contractor may have additional work to complete in the spring of 2022, which may include the asphalt surfacing. This additional work is expected to be completed by June 3, 2022.

SD Highway 50 in Chamberlain
Project Information:
This project is a 4 mile grading, surfacing, and landslide repair project on SD Highway 50 at Chamberlain. The project extends from K Street to I90 and is separated into multiple phases.
The first construction phase will be from the railroad bridge in Chamberlain to Sorenson Drive and will consist of landslide repair, roadway grading, and asphalt surfacing. When completed, the surfacing will be 4 lanes wide. This work is expected to be completed in late September.
The second phase will be from Sorenson Drive to I90, and will consist of shoulder widening and asphalt surfacing. When completed, this section will be 3 lanes wide (one lane in each direction with a center turn lane) and 8’ wide shoulders. This work is planned for September through November.
The third phase is on Main Street from K Street to the American Creek bridge, and on Courtland Street from Main Street to King Street. The work in this area will consist of milling and overlaying the existing asphalt surfacing. This work is planned for late September or early October.
