Asphalt Crack Seal Project to Begin on U.S. Highway 18 and S.D. Highway 79 in Southwest South Dakota

EDGEMONT and HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – On Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, crews will begin an asphalt crack seal project on portions of U.S. Highway 18 and S.D. Highway 79. The contractor will move from one location to the next in the following order:
- Highway 18 – Project begins at the South Dakota/Wyoming state line east for 13 miles to Edgemont for both lanes;
- Highway 18 – Project begins at Hot Springs east for three miles to Maverick Junction for all four lanes;
- Highway 79 – Project begins at Maverick Junction north for six miles to Buffalo Gap for the southbound lane only; and
- Highway 18 – Project begins at Oelrichs north for 10 miles to the Old Highway 79 intersection for the eastbound lanes only.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided through the project with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. Delays of up to 15 minutes can be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours. The contractor will be working Monday through Saturday for the duration of the project.
The prime contractor on the $117,479 project is Highway Improvements Inc. from Sioux Falls, SD. The completion date for this project will be Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.
